It’s easy to get lost in the noise of email marketing, blogging, social media and the never-ending variety of sales techniques and forget about truly connecting with people to build relationships.
(Which, by the way, isn’t something that happens overnight, or just after someone’s read a 5-part email welcome sequence.)
Do you sometimes get a bit disenchanted with the internet?
In a world where there’s so much to learn and even more to do, I have to admit – I really needed to have this conversation with Christy Mills. And my gut tells me that you do too.
Christy’s perspective and incredible gift for asking the introspective, soul-searching questions makes this episode a must watch. Because in a world where some are worried about the future of marketing on the internet, today’s interview is a reminder to take space, find quiet, and discover what matters most.
After we finished recording, Christy shared this quote with me from Brene Brown’s Braving the Wilderness. (It describes her philosophy in a nutshell!)
True belonging is the spiritual practice of believing in and belonging to yourself so deeply that you can share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone in the wilderness. True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who are.
Because education + change are great. But not to the extent that you lose yourself in the process.
Christy herself says “I’m not selling anything. I’m just sharing my words” but I honestly think her story (+ words) are much more powerful than that.
Christy’s approach to content and communication is one we can all learn from – whether we have a traditional business, an online business, a personal blog, or anything in between. Words are powerful. And true connection is magic.
In this episode we talk about lots of good stuff including:
- How to create content in an authentic-human-free-of-buzzwords way
- Why Christy decided to ditch email marketing (and what she focuses on instead)
- How to take space + find quiet when you really need it (Christy is GENIUS at asking introspective Q’s)
- Tying multiple passions together (and using a varied background to your advantage)
- Ditching the distractions + being intentional with how you spend time on the internet
- A consumer perspective on popular marketing channels + strategies
- The power of “just getting started”
Plus, Christy shares her experience inside of The Content Her Way Inner Circle (while I beam like a proud mama bear!)
So no matter if you’re creating content for business or you have a personal blog, this idea of viewing content as a means to share your experiences + stories is for you!
A quick note / clarification before we begin: Christy’s insights as a consumer of marketing channels + popular sales strategies that we (biz owners) often take for granted (email marketing, social media, affiliate marketing, etc.) is incredibly thought-provoking.
We’re not saying that any of these techniques are bad – like anything in business and life, it’s about HOW you use them. And following the mantra of Content Her Way, it’s about figuring out a way to make a tool or technique work for you OR giving yourself the permission to say no to something (and being ok with your decision).
At the very least, I think Christy’s perspective reminds us to get back to WHY these tools were created in the first place (connection + community + storytelling + fun) and to not just view them as a “marketing” technique that you “have” to use. Take this as a reminder to check in with yourself and ask: WHY am I really doing / using this? Do I really NEED to be doing / using this? How does it make me FEEL?

This wife and mama – with 2 boys that are bigger than she is (haha!), came from the banking world one day and became a mother the next. Through her time at home she has spent her free time becoming a yoga teacher, reiki master, and diving into the world of mindfulness, intuitive living, and living a life where every moment counts.
Christy started a blog in the spring of 2016 talking about exactly those things! She loves to talk about all things that make a person tick, how to spread a little more love into the world, and is passionate about community, today’s youth, and creating a life that feeds the soul.
Her website, the freedom chronicles is currently under construction so until it’s up and running you can find her on Instagram talking about all things “true” with all the feels.
